MID-19TH CENTURY NORTH CAROLINA FARM TABLE WITH FINELY TURNED, COUNTRY SHERATON LEGS AND IMPECCABLE BLUE PAINTED SURFACE: Blue paint with impeccable early surface is the first thing one must point out when describing this large, ca 1840-1870, North Carolina farm table. So few tables with strong color have reached the marketplace in recent years, especially in blue, with patination and color that even approach the quality of this example, that I was simply shocked to encounter one of this caliber. The height of the top and lack of restoration are all significant to its desirability. Also important is the nicely bleached surface of the scrubbed top. Another notable feature is the narrow, turned legs, which are less often seen on Southern farm tables, but much more commonly encountered in rural New England. The well-balanced form completes the package, so-to-speak. Because the table isn't distinctly Southern, it can adapt to pieces from any region. Because the quality level should satisfy the most discerning buyer, the example can fill a void in best Americana collection. Condition: The top was once covered in cheese cloth and the shafts of the metal tacks remain around the perimeter. This covering helped to preserve the pine surface. There are a number of minor, circular stains on the top, some paint loss and expected wear throughout.
