Description....:
This terrific, Civil War, newspaper insert / broadside was made to announce the 1864 reelection of Abraham Lincoln. With a large, spread-winged, federal eagle as its centerpiece, gripping olive branches and a cluster of arrows, and sunburst overhead to symbolize the glory of victory, the copy reads as follows:

"Abraham Lincoln Re-Elected President of the United States.

The Old Flag Waves in Triumph over the Free North!
No Quarter to Rebellion!
No Compromise with Treason!
Freedom and Union Forever!

The Loyal North has Declared for Freedom and the Union.
The Empire State Repudiates All Sympathy with Treason.
A Union Governor and Lieut. Governor.
Canal Commissioner, State Prison Inspector and Legislature.

Reuben E. Fenton Elected Governor of the State of New York!"

The manner in which the eagle is presented, perched on a globe, which is an element of New York symbolism, present on the New York State seal and on many other things that can be traced specifically to the state in terms of patriotic imagery.

I have never before encountered an example of this document, which appeared as the centerfold of the Albany Evening Journal on Thursday, November 10th, 1864. Note in particular the varied use of fonts throughout, which is typical of the 19th century. Because it comprised a dual-fold of the large format paper, the overall dimensions have wonderful scale. This plus great graphics result in an absolutely wonderful, Lincoln-related, Civil War object. Though I have searched extensively, I was only able to locate one other piece of large scale, 1864, newspaper-related ephemera of a similar nature, with great graphics, printed in the Gallipolis [Ohio] Journal. This did not encompass a two-page spread, or even an entire single page, but it did comprise most of page 2.

Condition: The entire 8-page spread from this leaf is included. Some small parts were clipped, probably by the original purchaser of the paper, in the period. There is some foxing, staining, bleeding of the ink through to the reverse, etc., bent and slightly torn edges, etc., but the overall condition is remarkable. In one area with loss, in the upper left, a length of cotton was placed behind the paper for masking purposes.
