6 GALLON STONEWARE CROCK WITH BLUE SLIP GAME BIRD DECORATION, MADE IN ROCHESTER, NEW YORK BY JOHN BURGER, circa 1854-1867
Dimensions (inches): 14.5" tall x 12.75" diameter
Description:
6-gallon stoneware crock with blue slip decoration that depicts a standing game bird. Made in Rochester, New York by John Burger sometime between his 1854 acquisition of a pottery that he had formally shared a 1/3 interest in, and 1867, when he turned the operation over to his sons and his son-in-law, the bird is most likely to have represented a Northern Bob White. While many stoneware crocks, jugs, and churns of this era have bird decoration, gamebirds are extremely unusual.

Condition: There is hairline crack and a small, interior rim chip, but the crock is structurally sound.
