CARVED EAGLE WITH EXUBERANT DESIGN, BOLD SCALE, AND DARK, EARLY PATINA, FOUND IN VERMONT, CIRCA 1880
Dimensions (inches): 61" wide x 20" tall x 6" deep
Description:
Carved wooden eagle with substantial scale, form, and presence. Made circa 1880, the head is bent, and the wings, outstretched, in a dominant stance. The crazed, varnished surface is darkly oxidized and nearly black in color. The most beautiful characteristic, however, is the exuberance of the feathers, plentiful and well-defined. Absent of arrows and any sort of federal shield, the sculpture grips a simple perch. At some point, early, hand-forged, iron straps were added to the reverse to aid in hanging. These can easily be removed, but I found that they actually bring something to the table in terms of the visual attractiveness of the overall, early, whimsical appearance. At just over five feet in width, twenty inches in height, and six inches deep, the bold impact of its size and design are not soon forgotten.

Verbal provenance is that the eagle decorated a Vermont courthouse.
