WHITE-PAINTED, COUNTRY STORE COUNTER / APOTHECARY WITH 15 DRAWERS, CIRCA 1840-1870
Dimensions (inches): 34.5" t x 73.25" l x 25" d
Description:
American store counter / apothecary with three stacks of five drawers, the last row of which is graduated from the four above. Made of pine or fir, the construction is of cut nails and mortised stretchers and the thick cases of the drawers are dovetailed. The surface is old white paint with lots of attractive wear. Made circa 1840-1870.

Condition: The counter was longer and has been shortened. The right side and back were added, made of early, white-painted, plank flooring. The top is original but was somehow moved. Cut nails were used to accomplish this. The mushroom knobs are not original to the case, but are wonderful, are perfect for the piece, and are mid-19th century. When it comes to store counters of this nature for use as kitchen islands or sideboards in a country dining room, being early, having good paint and form are more important than imperfections and modifications necessary to make them functional. This is a beautiful one.
