BERKS COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA CORNER CUPBOARD, PAINT-DECORATED, EX-HELEN HUNT:
Berks County, Pennsylvania corner cupboard on bun feet, made circa 1830-1840. Architectural frame stiles with corner blocks and wide overhanging cornice. The contrasting white paint on the 9-pane door is a Berks County characteristic. The original grained decoration is on a mustard background, and executed to mimic a combination of bird's eye and tiger maple. The quality of the paint and its dry surface are exquisite.
The interior is in its original white wash, and there are both spoon racks and two rows of groved plate rails.
To fit into a perspective corner, measure from the corner outward. 38.5" of space is needed at the cornice, and 35" at the body. The overall width has nothing to do with fitting a corner cupboard into the corner of a room. But for the sake of being complete, this measurement is 54.5".
Provenance: Ex-Helen Hunt collection. Previously acquired at a Bucks County, Pennsylvania farm sale.
Condition: The construction is very sound with no significant repairs. The white paint on the door was refreshed at some point in its history, and the earlier white is visible in some areas. The early glass and glazing are original. |
