Description....:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed black lettering that reads: "Votes for Women" on a cheddar yellow ground. Note the interesting, vertical orientation of the word "votes" and the fanciful scrollwork above and below the word "for". Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, though these sometimes appear in the States.

Suffrage pennants are extremely scarce and sought after. An example of this particular pennant is documented in "The Keynoter: Journal of the American Political Items Conservators," Summer/Fall/Winter 2008 (Women's Suffrage Special Triple Issue), Volume 2008, Number 2-4, p.133.)

A period image survives of two of these pennants in use in 1913, at an auto show in Upstate New York, in the Catskill Mountains, in the town of Delhi. Both are black, probably with yellow lettering. Yellow Suffrage pennants were often produced in two variants, with the colors simply reversed.

Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric. The mount was placed in a modern molding with a surface that is very dark brown, almost black, with reddish overtones and highlights, to which a gilded molding with a rippled profile was added as a liner. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: There is very minor staining along the lower edge in the area underneath “votes” and the scrollwork, and a couple of tiny stains elsewhere, but the overall condition is exceptional. On a scale of 1-10 this is a solid 10 across known examples of Suffrage pennants.
