Description....:
Triangular, felt, suffragette pennant with printed white lettering that reads: "Votes for Women" on a cheddar yellow ground. Note the interesting, vertical orientation of the word "votes" and the fanciful scrollwork above and below the word "for". Yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England, though these sometimes appear in the States.

Suffrage pennants are extremely scarce and sought after. An example of this particular pennant is documented in "The Keynoter: Journal of the American Political Items Conservators," Summer/Fall/Winter 2008 (Women's Suffrage Special Triple Issue), Volume 2008, Number 2-4, p.133.)

Mounting: The pennant has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton twill (treated for color-fastness). The mount was placed in a modern molding with a step-down profile and a gilkded molding was added as a liner. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: There is modest to moderate soiling of the yellow felt. One of the violet or faded black cotton ties is absent. There are holes and losses at the top and bottom of the hoist end, accompanied by two small holes and tiny dark stains along the top edge, near the fly end. Many of my clients prefer early flags and related textiles to show their age and history of use.
