Description:
Native American beadwork coin purse. Made ca 1880, this is a two-pocket design, beaded on the front and back, probably of Plains origin. Featured on the obverse is a federal shield with 12-stars and 11 pales (vertical stripes). On occasion the number of stars and stripes on beadwork items is meaningful, but in most cases, such as this one, the counts are merely decorative. The device is set upon a sky blue ground that is particularly beautiful. On the reverse is a floral image, on the same colored ground, rendered in yellow, red, orange, violet, and two shades of green. Made of hide, there is a snap closure and a brass thumb tab. The inside of the flap is lined with velvet. All-in-all this is a wonderful patriotic Native American object with great color and earlier than most examples of the form that one will encounter. Mounting: The purse has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, that was washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The mount was then placed in a deep, shadowbox style molding with a step-down profile, dark brown in color, with red highlights and exposed wood grain, to which a gilded shadowbox molding was added as a liner. The glazing is crystal clear, anti-reflective, U.V. protective museum plexiglass.
