Description:
Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania, plank-seat settee of the mid-19th century (1845-65), in a half-spindle-back style with a straight crest rail, curved slightly at the shoulders. The soldier blue painted background is both unusual and highly desired. The theorem-like registers are typical of rural Pennsylvania chairs and benches. These are hand-painted with fruit and flora in a coppery bronze, black, grey, yellow and gold, and repeated on the front of the seat. There is more foliage at each end of the crest rail. The panels, arms and turnings are striped with grey and black and the bulbous portions are highlighted by the same colors as well as gold. The overall result is a colorful and well-executed example of Pennsylvania German folk art on a piece of rural-made, paint-decorated furniture, in one of the most desired colors among collectors. Condition: There is minor wear, far less than expected. Some minor scratches in the paint surface on the seat were professionally minimized in such a way that almost no paint had to be added.
