GRANITE LAMB GARDEN SCULPTURE, NEW YORK:
Hand-carved granite lamb with great detail and character. The fantastic surface is a result of not only its age and the quartz content in stone, which give its surface a faint glitter in places, but is mostly due to the presence of all types of green and grey lichen and moss that have grown on it in the outdoor setting in which it was kept. The face is great, almost smiling, which adds a sophisticated folk nature to the sculpture, a masterpiece among American examples. Circa 1860. Found in New York State. |
