Description....:
VERY RARE CONFEDERATE REUNION FLAG WITH OVERPRINT FROM THE 1ST MISSOURI CAVALRY:

3rd National pattern Confederate parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton. In the field is an overprint from the 1st Missouri Cavalry. Made circa 1900-1920, I know of only two other examples like it to exist, both of which are slightly different than this one. Confederate parade flags with overprinted text are extremely scarce, especially those related to a particular unit. Missouri was a border state, and never officially seceded from the Confederacy. This makes the Missouri relationship, in itself, an interesting element.

Brief history of the 1st MO Cavalry: The 1st Missouri Cavalry was enlisted on December 30, 1861 with the majority of men being transferred from the Missouri State Guard. Following the Battle of Pea Ridge it was transferred East of the Mississippi to serve at Vicksburg. When Vicksburg fell on July 4, 1863, the regiment surrendered and immediately paroled. Since it was "declared exchanged" on 12 September 1863 it was able to go back into Confederate service. At some point between September 1863 and May 4, 1865 (final surrender at Meridian, Mississippi), it was consolidated with the 3rd Missouri Cavalry regiment. During its service, the 1st Missouri Cavalry served in: Little's Brigade; Gates' Brigade/Missouri Brigade, Bowens Division and finally in Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana. Its commanders were as follows: Col. Elijah Gates; Lt. Col. Richard B. Chiles; Lt. Col. C.B. Cleveland; Lt. Col. George W. Law; Lt. Col. William D. Maupin; Maj. Robert R. Lawther; Maj. William C. Parker. [Source: http://www.missouridivision-scv.org/mounits/1mocav.htm]

Mounting: The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a solid walnut frame with a gilded liner that dates to the period between 1870 and 1890. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
