46 STARS IN "TILTED ROWS", SILK, 1907-1912, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD:

46 star American parade flag, printed on silk. Silk flags often have the advantage of retaining very strong coloration, and this is no exception. Note that all of the stars are canted slightly in either the 1:00 or 11:00 position. The stars with row counts of 8 point to 11:00, while those with counts of 7 point to 1:00 position. This adds a nice visual element to the flag's design.

The 46th state, Oklahoma, joined the Union on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory from his Rough Rider days, and pushed it through to statehood. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the future addition of the state, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans.

Mounting: The solid oak frame has a fluted profile, a dark varnished surface, and dates to the period between 1890 and 1920. At some point the frame was married to a gold liner that dates to the mid-20th century. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
