Eureka Powder Works gunpowder tin with "Imperial Powder" brand name, third quarter 19th century, with bittersweet red-orange paper label. Illustrations include a landscape with a hunter on a lake with mountains in the background, and the head of a hound with crossed guns and oak branches. Decorated with scrollwork flora and fauna, the text reads "Prepared & Adapted to Rifle & Percussion Guns."
Eureka Powder Works was founded by George Mathewson in Durham, New Hampshire in 1853. The firm shipped its product in decorated tins throughout America. A series of deadly explosions in the powder mill, including one in 1860, convinced Mathewson to sell out to Louis P. Childs, who renamed it Union Powder Works (exact date unknown).
