HOOKED RUG WITH PATRIOTIC SPREADWINGED EAGLE & SHIELD ON A MOTTLED GREEN AND MUSTARD GROUND:
An especially fine choice of colors and execution of imagery are present in this American hooked rug with a patriotic eagle as its central device. The mottled green and mustard border are an unexpectedly pleasing compliment to the red, white, and blue. The foliage and scrollwork, as well as the shading, add a level of sophistication not typically seen in examples with eagles. The size is large, contributing a bold presence, and the multi-sided form is especially attractive. Signed "G.B.C. - 1933", but the artistic style and the shades of dyed wool are much more reminiscent of the 19th century.
