CANTED-FRONT, FLAT-TOP, PENNSYLVANIA GRAIN BIN IN MUSTARD PAINT, CA 1840:
Pennsylvania grain bin in early mustard paint over an earlier white wash. The yellow surface is mid-late 19th century. It has a wonderful translucence and patina, accompanied by expected wear. The construction is of poplar with single plank sides, a single plank top with a molded lower edge, hinged to a narrow board, a 2-board front with one wide plank mortised to a narrow one, and a back made of three mortise-and-tenon boards. The remainder of the joinery is with cut nails. The hinges are cast iron. The interior is open, without partitions.
As a practical matter, I use grain bins throughout my own house. They are great in the kitchen or pantry for bags of dog food, extra water and soda, shopping bags and other bulky products. They are great in living, bedrooms and hallways for extra quilts, pillows, and other linens. I keep them handy near sofas for this reason. They can also double as wood boxes and so are good near the hearth.
Condition: There is some expected wear and paint loss from obvious use. There are no significant repairs or repaint. |
