Description:
EXCEPTIONAL 1827 GERMAN TOWN CLOCK FACE WITH BLACK PAINT AND GILDED NUMERALS:
Fantastically bold graphics in gold gilt adorn this 1827 German clock face made from wooden planks, covered by tin sheeting that was affixed with cut nails. The door for changing the hands is hinged with great, Moravian-style hardware. The planks are deeply hand-planed and joined with mortised splines.
Most clock faces that reach the marketplace today are black-lettered with white backgrounds. Most for sale in the marketplace are fraudulent. When combined with the game board-like graphic qualities of this example, the reason become clear why this example is so noteworthy.
Condition: In-service re-touch throughout and expected wear. Iron supports added on reverse for stability.
