Description:
GEORGE E. FORSTER (1817-1896), STILL LIFE OF TROUT, NEW YORK, DATED 1888:

Very attractive oil on canvas painting of a Lake Trout and three Brown Trout by George E. Forster (1817-1896), signed and dated 1888.

Born in Bavaria, Germany, George Foster moved to New York at the end of the Civil War in 1865. He lived primarily in Brooklyn. By 1870, he was exhibiting at the National Academy of Design and the Boston Athenaeum. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association in 1879 under the name "Foster" (his last name often misspelled or confused). Known for lush still lifes, primarily of fruit and sometimes including animals, his works have brought between $5,000 and $90,000. There are 60+ auction entries for this well-established painter.

The frame is a marriage of a wide, gilded liner with silhouetted decoration that is period to the work (1870-1890) and a modern, burled molding.

Condition: Cleaned and relined. Minor touch-up around perimeter from frame rub and two small spots within the body of the canvas.
