FROM THE MASTAI COLLECTION: CAMPAIGN POSTCARD IN STARS & STRIPES FORMAT WITH PORTRAIT OF GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK IN THE CANTON, CA 1880:
Stars and Stripes postcard made for the 1880 political campaign of General Winfield Scott Hancock, who ran with William H. English against James A. Garfield and Chester A. Arthur. Hancock was an instrumental military leader during the Civil War (1861-65), most famous for his actions at Gettysburg. Although he remained in military service after the war, he also made a move for the presidency on two occasions. The first of these occurred in 1868 when he pursued the Democratic ticket and lost to Francis Seymour, who then lost the general election to Ulysses S. Grant. Hancock tried again in 1880 and gained the Democratic nomination, only to be narrowly defeated by Republican James Garfield.
The postcard is made in the Stars & Stripes format, with an oval portrait of Hancock superimposed in the canton, over top of the star field. This beautifully graphic item was part of the collection of Boleslaw and Marie D'Ostrange-Mastai. The Mastai's held one of the most important private collections of American flags in the country, and their landmark book, "The Stars and the Stripes", published in 1973, remains the Bible of flag collecting. Most of the collection was stamped and numbered. In this case the card was embossed with a special stamp reserved for the Mastai's paper items.
Mounting: This is a pressure mount between 100% cotton velvet and u.v. protective Plexiglas. The silver gilt molding dates to the period between 1840 and 1870.
Condition: Excellent. |
