Description:
PATRIOTIC WINDOW BANNER WITH A PORTRAIT OF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, MADE TO SUPPORT HIS CAMPAIGN FOR RE-ELECTION IN 1940:

Patriotic window banner with a large portrait image of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Made for his third successful campaign for the Presidency of the United States in 1940, his image is set within an oval window, on a blue ground, flanked by a white star in each corner. Roosevelt's name appears in red above the portrait, which is flanked by Laurel branches. Below are the words "For President".

The banner is printed on a synthetic blended fabric. The bottom edge is trimmed with a gold fringe and there is a wooden staff along the top with gold-painted finials and gold tassels.

An example of this banner is in the collection of the Smithsonian and is documented as item 1149 in “Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth, 1775 to the Present”, by Herbert Ridgeway Collins (Smithsonian Press, 1979), p. 444.

Roosevelt’s election to his fourth presidential term in 1944 led to the passing of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which imposed a two-term limit.

Mounting: The dark gold modern molding has very fine lines of decoration. To this I added a gilded liner that is antique, dating to the 1870-1890 period. The banner has been hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: The wooden staff was broken in the center. I repaired this. There is a tiny bit of soiling at that point, but the banner is otherwise excellent.
