PATRIOTIC WINDOW BANNER WITH A PORTRAIT OF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT, MADE TO SUPPORT HIS RE-ELECTION IN 1940:

Patriotic window banner, printed on silk or rayon, made to support the 1940 re-election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt for a third term as President of the United States. This red, white and blue, shield-shaped textile features a portrait of FDR in the center, surrounded by a red circle, divided into equal parts by 8 blue stars, underneath which are the words "Our Next President". Images of patriotic banners flank either side of the center register. "Franklin D. Roosevelt" is printed in the lower register, over a single star. In the upper are the words "God Bless America", particularly poignant as the nation prepared to enter WWII. The original, blue-painted, metal bar supports the banner at the top, which has a round brass loop for hanging.

It is interesting to note that Roosevelt's election to his fourth presidential term in 1944 led to the passing of the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which imposed a two-term limit.

"Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth, 1775 to the Present" by Herbert Ridgeway Collins (Smithsonian Press, 1978), is the predominant book on American political textiles. While this exact example is not documented in the text, the Republican Party mate, picturing Wendell Wilkie, appears on as item 1188 on page 454.

Mounting: The red varnished frame dates to the period 1890 and 1910. The banner has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.

Condition: There is minor to moderate water staining throughout.
