FOLK PORTRAIT OF A SHEEP: "BAKEWELL'S PRIZE RAM", SIGNED L.R. JOSEPH, 1870-1890:
This great folk-style portrait of a sheep, entitled "Bakewell's Prize Ram" is executed in oil on heavy brown artist's board. Painted sometime during the last quarter of the 19th century, it is signed "L.R. Joseph" in the bottom right corner.
The fact that the work is most certainly English would matter a lot in the American market if there were an abundance of American folk paintings of prized rams. But there are not. In fact, although I am certain they exist, I can't recall having seen one in recent years. Even among English paintings that reach the American market, 19th century paintings of sheep with great folk characteristics, such as this one's classic, outlandish, exaggeratedly square body, are rarely seen.
The work has been married to this great, two-tone gilded and painted frame that dates to the period between 1850 and 1870 and is of exceptional quality, with original surface.
