FOLK PAINTING OF A MID-19TH CENTURY HOUSE AND BARN, CA 1860-80:
This oil on canvas, landscape painting features a large, brick, Civil War era house and grey wooden barn. Beyond the horse that peers out of a window, perhaps my favorite elements are the curved, wrought iron fence with its two arched gates and the arrow-shaped banner weathervane on the barn's roof. If you are wondering what's odd about the house, other than its interesting form, it might be the fact that the shutters are drawn. This is certainly unusual in a house painting and something I can not remember seeing in any other, at least not in the primary residence. A wonderful, folky, and peculiar work, done by an amateur artist, probably a child, sometime in the period between 1860 and 1880. The lack of gingerbread trim and later Victorian elements suggests an earlier date.
The sign on the tree reads: "No Tresspassing". A signature of some sort follows, maybe the name of the property owner, maybe the initials of the painter, but it is illegible.
Provenance: Found in the Indiana home of a collector who moved from Pennsylvania. I expect it is of Northeast origin, probably Northern Pennsylvania or Upstate New York.
Condition: Untouched, nice craquelure. |
