FOLK PAINTING OF A HUNTERS ON A WOODED LANDSCAPE, 1870-90:
Found in Maine, the folk art painting on tin probably served as an over-mantle at a hunting lodge. The work has a great lack of perspective that, along with beautiful colors, contributes to the strength of its whimsical qualities.
In the image, three hunters and three dogs seek snipe or perhaps woodcock over a small lake with a mountainous background, while a stag and doe watch from the edge of the bank.
Mounting: I married the work to an American ripple profile molding that dates to the period between 1830 and 1850 and retains its original gilded liner.
Condition: Excellent, with only very minor paint loss and no repairs. At some point a wooden strainer was adhered to the reverse for support. Given the strength of its colors, the painting may have been cleaned at some point. A light varnish was applied. |
