FOLK PAINTING OF FOURTEEN BOBWHITE QUAIL, OIL ON CANVAS IN AN ELONGATED FORMAT, circa 1890-1920
Dimensions (inches): Frame - 22.25" x 38.25", work - 17.25" x 33.75"
Description:
Folk portrait of a covey of Bobwhite, painted in oil on canvas. Dating somewhere between approximately 1890 and 1920, likely on the earlier end of that spectrum, say approximately 1900, the setting is of a snow-covered, wooded landscape, surrounding a clearing, in which two gumdrop style haystacks are nestled beside a tiny red house and yellow barn. There are 14 quail in total, including what might be immature birds, gathered before and within the hollow of a tree. I expect this is northern New England, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, or Maine. Note the elongated profile of the scene, which lends a more unusual presentation. The name “Higgins” appears on the verse on an applied, paper tag, as well as in two inscriptions in the wooden stretcher. These appear to have been added in the mid-20th century. The work was unframed when I acquired it. I paired it with a very deep, gilded, shadowbox molding, with a dark brown/black exterior, and a basketweave style, flat profile liner with similar brown/black surface. Condition: There is a very minor scrape in the upper, left-hand corner and a few extremely tiny losses. The canvas is in very good shape and there is no restoration.
