WWII PERIOD (1941-45) JAPANESE NATIONAL FLAG, OF THE TYPE GIVEN TO JAPANESE SOLDIERS BY FAMILY MEMBERS, WITH WELL WISHES INKED IN THE WHITE FIELD, BROUGHT HOME BY SGT. WILLIAM D. HOLLAND OF LUCEDALE MISSISSIPPI:

Japanese soldiers were usually provided with a Japanese flag, printed on silk or a like fabric, when they went away to war. These were typically inked by family members and friends with well wishes for honor and safe return. Such flags were not in the sun disc format with outstretched rays. That was the flag of the Imperial Japanese Navy. They were rather in the form of the national flag, with a simple, large, red, rising sun in the center, nicknamed the "meatball" flag in jest by American servicemen.

Most of these flags have since been separated from the American soldier who acquired them from some unfortunate Japanese counterpart, when he was captured or killed in action. Hence the story of the flag is often forgotten at both ends of the spectrum. This particular example, however, made of rayon, which has beautiful ivory and lipstick red coloration, was brought home by Sgt. William D. Holland of Lucedale, Mississippi. Holland enlisted as a private in 1942 in the town of Shelby, along the Mississippi River in the northern part of the state. Accompanying the flag are Holland's rank insignia from his uniform, which is a nice addition to support the associated history of a captured WWII flag. The rank insignia can be framed with the flag.
