REMEMBER THE MAINE PATRIOTIC COVER (envelope) - CUBAN FLAG - 1898
This is an outstanding cover (small 19th century envelope) with a full bleed image of a Cuban flag and text that says "Remember the Maine". Covers that were mailed are more valuable to cover collectors. I typically like covers if they were not mailed, unless they are still very graphic and the postmark is interesting. This cover has it all. It was postmarked in the midst of the Spanish American War, which only lasted one year (1898). The postmark is July 3rd, Washington, DC, and it was delivered on July 5th, obviously sent in the additional patriotism brought about by Independence Day. This was, which only lasted one year. Not all Span-Am War pieces were made during the war. Many are post war (done in 1899 while patriotic fervor was still present). I have not before seen this cover design. |
