PATRIOTIC RIBBON WITH ILLUSTRATIONS OF COLUMBUS' LANDING AND A 44 STAR FLAG WITH A BEAUTIFUL MEDALLION CONFIGURATION, 1892:

In 1892, America celebrated the 400th anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus. This patriotic ribbon, printed on silk, was produced for the recognition of that event. It features an illustration of an American national flag with 44 stars, arranged in a triple wreath with a single star in the center and a flanking star in each corner of the blue canton. Above this is a depiction of a yellow broach in the form of an American eagle with shield on its breast. In the center of the flag is a circular medallion with an image of Columbus planting the flag of Spain on the shore of what he thought was America and claimed for the country that funded his historic expedition across the Atlantic to discover the new world. Surrounding this is text that reads: "Landing of Columbus".

In the bottom register of the ribbon is more text, printed in various styles of lettering in blue and red, whimsically arranged, that reads as follows: "National Public School Celebration; Columbus Day; Oct. 21st.; 1492 1892; Official Badge; Patent Applied For".

The 44th state, Wyoming, gained its statehood on July 10th, 1890. The 44 star flag was official from 1891-1986. Circular medallion star configurations were no longer commonly encountered in this is the ribbon's best feature.
