Description: |
|
Indian beadwork coin purse, large in scale, and with patriotic imagery that includes a traditional federal eagle on one side, with a shield on its breast, clasping an olive branch and arrows, and crossed flags on the other with the letters "U.S.A." executed on deer hide, the background is cornflower blue and there is a red, white, and Navy blue border with diagonal striping. There is a brass zipper with a brass beaded chain pull. The purse would have been produced for the tourist trade, probably targeted at the Civil War, Span-Am War, and WWI veteran's market. The origin might be Iroquois (Upstate New York). Similar material was produced throughout the Niagara Falls region.
The overall presentation is particularly fine in terms of both style and choice of colors.
Mounting: The purse has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, that was washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The mount was then placed in a deep, shadowbox style molding, dark brown in color, with red highlights and exposed wood grain, to which a gilded shadowbox molding was added as a liner. The glazing is the best grade of crystal clear, anti-reflective, U.V. protective museum glass.
Condition: Excellent. |
