Description: |
|
This mindboggling, intricate little ship is one of the more remarkable pieces of blown glass that I have ever encountered. Probably Czech-made and similar in nature to some of their most rare and extraordinary, figural, blown glass Christmas ornaments produced there, the body of the vessel is made of looping and interwoven strands of clear blue and opaque white. The array of fine, white ropes is nothing short of remarkable. Billowing down from the very top is a long, red commission pennant that wraps around a waving red flag.
Made sometime during the last quarter of the 19th century, a blue glass post, integral to the ship, extends through the bottom of the wooden base and affixes it in place. The base is original and is raised on 3 ball feet, with its original glass dome. All bout the ship is a mound of finely spun and flaked glass, with a consistency not unlike cotton candy, but coarser and reflective.
Tall, expressive, and sculptural, I can’t say enough about this exceptional curiosity.
Condition: On either side of the bow are two lines that terminate in mid-air. If followed out in straight lines, neither of these would intersect any other glass lines or any part of the ship, so it is difficult to know if they were broken at some point or not. Extremely careful examination yielded no clear answer. Otherwise the condition remarkable.
NOTE: HAND-DELIVERY IS A NECESSITY. |
