7 star American parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, made to commemorate the first wave of Confederate States that seceded from the Union on February 4th, 1861. Texas was the 7th of these states, which also included, in order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. While Northern children waved 13 star flags and flags with the full star count, some of their Southern counterparts waved 7, 8, & possibly 9 star flags as a subtle means of displaying their Confederate loyalties.
Some of these little parade flags date to the Civil War, like this example. Others were made post-war. Note how the stars of this particular variety have unusually elongated arms, which adds a nice degree of folk quality to the design.
Mounting: The flag was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and preservation of flags and have framed thousands of examples.
The solid walnut molding has a black-painted face and an incised channel in the center with gold paint. To this a gilded liner was added. Both frames date to the 1870-1880 era. The background is 100% cotton twill, black in color. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There is moderate to significant fading of the red-orange stripes The flag presents beautifully. Many of my clients prefer early flags to show their age and history of use. |
