LARGE FORMAT, CONFEDERATE 1ST NATIONAL (STARS & BARS) BIBLE FLAG WITH 14 EMBROIDERED SILK STARS:
Confederate 1st national format (Stars & Bars) bible flag, with 14 stars to represent the 11 states that officially seceded from the Union, plus 3 additional border states that, while they did not officially secede, generally supported the Southern cause. This is a rare star count for a Bible flag, as there were 5 border states by the end of the war, 4 for most of the war, and 2 that were strongest in their support. Three stars is thus an odd number to see added to the official count of 11, which suggests that it may have come from one of the 3 less-active border states, Maryland, Delaware, or West Virginia.
This striking example is made of treadle-sewn wool with hand-embroidered stars made from gold silk floss. A length of white ladies' dress silk or ribbon at the fly end serves as a decorative fringe.
Bible flags were typically small enough to fit in a bible without folding, but some were larger in format, like this one, which would have to have been folded. The larger examples make for a bolder display and are generally more highly desired. |
