CIVIL WAR, PRO-UNION BROADSIDE/FLYER WITH A 35-STAR FLAG IMAGE:
Civil war period patriotic broadside/flyer with "Our Country and Our Flag; the Union at all Hazards" slogan and image of a sailor shimmying up a flag pole, while gripping a hammer and the finial of flag staff. The flag flying on the staff has 35 stars, which dates it to the 1863-65 time frame. This same image is also seen on a style of Civil War cover (a small, personal letter sized envelope). This small-scale paper item would have been sold as a wartime memento at a parade, or perhaps at an 1864 political rally, or as the funeral train travelled with Lincoln's body and people came to pay their respects. Given the elongated, vertical shape, it may have afterwards seen use as a bookmark.
West Virginia was admitted into the Union as the 35th state on June 20th, 1863, a few days before the battle of Gettysburg. The 35th star was officially added on July 4th, and the flag was used during the closing years of the war. Production would have generally ceased one year later, however, with the addition of the 36th state.
Mounting: The frame is a late-19th century, gilded liner with gold over-paint and nice surface. This is a sandwich mount between 100% cotton and U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is minor foxing and there is minor loss in the bottom left corner. |
