Description....:
7 STARS, A CONFEDERATE SYMPATHIZER FLAG WITH OVERPRINTED MERCHANT ADVERTISING, 1876-1900:

7 star American parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton and affixed to its original wooden staff, made to commemorate the first wave of Confederate States that seceded from the Union on February 4th, 1861. Texas was technically the 7th of these states, which also included, in order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana.

"F.S. Emmert" is overprinted upside-down (by accident) across the stripes in black ink. This flag was found in Winchester, VA, and though my research did not turn up anything related to this name, in all likelihood the text relates to an area merchant. Parade flags with store-related advertising are extremely rare and interesting to advanced flag collectors. While the flag is small and the text isn't elaborate, the presence of the lettering is highly unusual, especially on a 7-star parade flag. I know of no other 7-star varieties with any manner of overprint.

While Northern children waved tiny 13 star flags, some of their Southern counterparts waved 7, 8, & possibly 9 star flags as a subtle means of displaying their Confederate loyalties. This example dates to the last quarter of the 19th century, probably the 1890's, as a group of these flags was found with some 45 star parade flags (1896-1907) that had the same overprint.

Mounting: The paint-decorated and gilded molding is ca 1860-1880. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: There are no significant condition issues.
