White, felt pennant, printed in red and blue pigment, with the names “Kennedy” and “Johnson” horizontally down the center, separated by the Democrat donkey. Made for the successful 1960 presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, the names of the two future presidents appear in relief, above and below, on fields of red and blue, aligned on the diagonal, in continuous repeat. Blue felt ties are machine-stitched along the hoist. A wonderfully graphic textile.
Mounting: The banner was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples.
The textile has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, which has been washed and treated for colorfastness. The mount was placed in a two-part frame that consists of a step-down profile molding, dark brown in color, nearly black, with reddish undertones and highlights. To this a flat profile molding was added, with a finish like old gun metal. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic (Plexiglas).
Condition: There is minor staining in limited areas. |
