Description: |
|
Painting of an English pointer marking a downed pheasant by a stream. British, rendered circa 1820 in oil on canvas, and of exceptional quality, this is either by or in the circle of Philip Reinagle (1749-1833), a member of the Royal Academy who trained as a portrait artist under Allan Ramsy (1713-1784). Born in Scotland to a Hungarian musician, Philip began as a portraitist, and was exceptional in the copying of old masters—a skill later shared by two of his 9 daughters. Reinagle is best remembered, however, for his expertise as an accomplished painter of sporting art, especially spaniels. He nonetheless painted many hounds, setters, and pointers, such as the subject in this particular work, and did not generally sign his canvases. The gilt frame appears to be original.
