Description:
DIMINUTIVE QUILL WEATHERVANE, 1880-1910, WITH EXCEPTIONAL FORM AND GILDED SURFACE:

Made ca 1880-1910, this quill weathervane was of a type that New York manufacturer A.B. & W.T. Westervelt billed with the following verbiage in its 1883 catalogue: "Especially designed and adapted for Newspapers, Libraries, Banks, Schools, Colleges, Academies, and other Public Institutions." While the specific maker is unknown, hundreds of companies copied one-another and produced the same forms.

This example survives with exceptional surface and an appealing, shapely head. The top of the quill is lightly and attractively scratched, a great patina from the feet of the many birds that no doubt found it an agreeable perch.

The sizing (undercoat to the gilding) is red, like the gesso on some gilded frames. This color makes perfect sense behind yellow gold, but is certainly unusual among surviving examples.

Mount: The stand shown with this weathervane no longer exsits. There is now a very minimal wall mount. If you'd like a standing mount, I can have any sort of cast iron mount made for you, to suit your needs, at little or no charge.

Condition: Excellent. Minor dings. See above.
