Description: |
|
English painting of pheasant in oil on hardwood panel, circa 1860-80. Of notably diminutive scale, at just 5” x 6.5”, the work features a cock bird on a dirt path, in a brush-laden landscape, with a hen poised behind him, the latter rendered in a somewhat ghostly fashion.
A tiny signature in the lower right-hand corner appears to begin with the initials “J.H.,” (possible “T.H.”,), followed by a surname that may read “Filel,” though the characters are minuscule, at less than 1/8th inch tall, are indistinct, and where they end isn’t clear. Whatever the case may be, the size and quality of the painting are endearing. I paired this with a gilded, 19th century, American frame of the same period, with silhouetted striped decoration on its concave scoop and an ebonized surround with a bowed profile.
Condition: The varnish has darkened, but there are no repairs / restoration. |
