DEER ON AN EVERGREEN LANDSCAPE, CHARCOAL ON SANDPAPER, 1850:
Charcoal on sandpaper, ca 1850. These works were not actually done on sandpaper in the modern sense of the word. Rather the artist would create a drawing with pencils or pastels and coat the finished product with marble dust, which gave it an interesting, glittery luster. Sometimes called "sandpaper painting", this example depicts a river landscape with mountains, evergreens, and deer. It's unusual and interesting for the subject matter of this particular media to include animals without buildings, boats, or other man-made objects.
A great little work with a nice Adirondack feel and a terrific 19th century gilded frame. |
