Description:
COUNTRY SHERATON WORK TABLE WITH SHAPED GALLERY AND CORNER SHELVES IN EXCEPTIONAL, RED-PAINTED AND DECORATED SURFACE, ca 1820, NEW ENGLAND:

Country Sheraton work table on finely turned legs with one drawer and a shaped gallery, into which small corner shelves were integrated for candles or other utilitarian function. The form is particularly well-balanced and attractive, but the best feature is the outstanding condition of the red-painted surface. Some of this is solid red and some is decorated to resemble mahogany. The decorated panels include the gallery and the drawer front. The entire surface has pleasant and desirable craquelure, which has obscured the light graining in such as way that the overall presentation is moreover simply one of red paint. Unless false graining is exaggerated in such a way to add substantial folk value, a plain red surface is generally more desired than traditional false graining. So the way in which this table has aged has actually made it more valuable.

Made of pine and probably of New York or New England origin, ca 1820-40, the maker may have intended this to be used as a wash stand. Although there is no hole to accommodate a bowl, as would often be present in such circumstance, wear on the top and shelf surfaces suggests that it served in this capacity. The absence of a large hole is desirable to collectors, because the lack of a flat surface isn't not practical for modern, everyday use. The combination of excellent early surface, strong color, attractive and desirable form, and a nice early date result in a great little country work table that is functional for almost any space.

Construction: Pine with mortised and pinned, turned legs that are blond hardwood, probably maple; cut nail construction elsewhere; dovetailed drawer.

Condition: Expected and attractive wear on surfaces. Minor paint loss elsewhere. Brasses replaced by a former owner.
