PRINTED COTTON KERCHIEF, MADE FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN OF HERBERT HOOVER IN 1932, A SCARCE AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE:

Printed cotton kerchief, made for the presidential campaign of Herbert Hoover in 1932, when he ran against and lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt. A large portrait image, printed in blue, serves as the center medallion. Hoover was the incumbent, which is why the words "Our President" appear at the bottom of the central image. The companion piece exists to support the campaign of FDR, which is identical except that it includes his portrait, below which is simply his name.

The border of this attractive textile is comprised of a series of 48 smaller, circular medallions, each of which bears a highly detailed illustration that reflects one of the 48 states. A patriotic eagle with a 13 star shield on its breast and an "E Pluribus Unum" streamer below flank each corner. The eagles and state medallions are printed in red, and the background of the kerchief is white.

An example of this kerchief resides in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's Division of Political History. It is documented as item 1087 on page 423 of "Threads of History, Americana Recorded on Cloth, 1775 - the Present", by Herbert Ridgeway Collins (1979, Smithsonian Press). Collins formerly served as the Smithsonian's curator of Political History and his book is the most comprehensive reference on political textiles.

Mounting: The kerchief has been hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color. The cotton was washed to remove excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective.

Condition: There is very minor foxing, but there are no significant condition issues.
