CONFEDERATE PARADE FLAG COVER [ENVELOPE] WITH PORTRAIT OF JEFFERSON DAVIS:
Confederate parade flag cover (envelope) with an 11-stars 1st National design flag, more commonly known as the Stars & Bars, and an oval a portrait of Jefferson Davis at the hoist end of the central white stripe.
While some Confederate covers were produced during wartime, this beautiful design was more likely produced in the North in the Centennial era, post-war (1870-80), by a Philadelphia printer. This example used to be common among collectors of antique covers, but over the years examples have become very rare and it is a highly desired form among flag enthusiasts.
Mounting: The cover has been sandwiched between u.v. protective plexiglas and 100% cotton velvet. It was then placed in a tremendous gilded frame, with early, alligatored surface, that dates to the 1820-1850 period. |
