CONFEDERATE 1ST NATIONAL FLAG COVER (ENVELOPE) ADVERTISING JEFFERSON DAVIS AND ALEXANDER STEPHENS FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA (1861):

Confederate cover (envelope) with a 7-star, 1st National design flag, more commonly known as the "Stars & Bars". The printed red bars silhouette the following text:

Jeff. Davis, Prest.
Alexr H. Stephens. Vice Prest.

while the center white bar reads:

A Secession Envelope.

in a fancy script. The cover pays homage to Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens as President and Vice President of the Confederate States of America. Note the interesting use of punctuation. There are several known versions of this cover with varying text.

The initial wave of secession occurred on the 4th of February, 1861. Texas was the 7th of these states, which also included, in order, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. These were followed by Virginia on April 17th of that same year. It is likely that this cover was produced during that narrow window, as another version was produced with 8 stars.

Mounting: The frame is a marriage of a solid oak molding with a double-bevel profile that dates to the 1880's and gilded liner of the 1860-1890 period. This is a sandwich mount between U.V. protective acrylic and 100% cotton twill. The black background fabric was washed and treated to reduce and set the dye.

Condition: There is minor fading and a corner chip.
