GRAPHIC CIVIL WAR RECEIPT WITH 34 STAR FLAG FROM THE COOPER SHOP VOLUNTEER REFRESHMENT SALOON, DATED 1862:

May 15th, 1862, Civil War period receipt, with an interesting image of a 34 star flag, from the very famous Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon in Philadelphia. This was one of two privately owned and funded institutions that served as both a hospital to wounded soldiers and a place where meals and refreshments were served for the troops. The other was the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, which had its own hospital. The two organizations competed in what one author called "the friendly competition of devoted and motivated men and women actuated by the highest motives" (source: http://www.cem.va.gov/pdf/philly.pdf).

Mounting: This is an archival sandwich mount behind u.v. protective acrylic. The frame is a paint-decorated and gilded example of the 1870-1890 period.
