28.5" w x 6.5"-9" (tapered) h x 4.5" d |
Description: |
|
Paint decorated violin case with leather handle, embellished with beautiful folk interpretations of an American flag and shield, as well as combed decoration. Flag collectors should note that not only do the flag's stripes start above the canton, but that they start on white and end on white, and that the canton rests on a red stripe (also called the war stripe or blood stripe, this is a highly desired trait that sometimes appears in flags made while our nation was at war).
The painted surface is simply outstanding. Constructed of pine with cut nails, original hinges and lock. Made sometime within the Mexican War – Civil War era, ca 1845-1865.
Condition: Brass swing hooks added later. Professional repair to handle. |
