48 STARS, "CHARLES D. JAMESON" CIVIL WAR VETERANS POST, 1913 OR PRIOR:
48 star American national parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton. Overprinted in the stripe area in black ink are the words "Chas. D. Jameson, post No. 110, G.A.R." The G.A.R., or Grand Army of the Republic, was the primary Civil War veterans association for the Union army. Its members dressed up in Civil War uniforms, gathered for reunions, and marched in parades, among other activities. It is akin to today's VFW or American Legion, but the organization was more fraternal in nature.
Parade flags with overprinted advertising are very scarce and are an important subset in American flag collecting. While examples relating to the G.A.R. are probably the most common type, those with post names are much more interesting and much less available.
Note that stars are arranged in staggered rows , which was not an official pattern and was typically seen in 1913 and prior. Until 1912, there was no official star configuration for the Stars and Stripes, and thus the design was up to the flag-maker. In that year, President Taft signed an executive order that dictated, for the first time, an official configuration. But his order does not seem to have taken effect with many parade flag manufacturers until 1913 or after. The 48 star flag was official from 1912 until 1959.
Mounting: The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a paint decorated molding that dates to the 1910-1920 period. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective. |
