CARVED EAGLE PLAQUE WITH THE BEST COLOR AND GILDED SURFACE, WITH SCROLLWORK-BOUND DATES OF THE REVOLUTIONARY AND CIVIL WARS UNDER THE WORD "LIBERTY":
This beautiful carved and gilded eagle is fantastic because it's not the standard fare. Found in a lodge hall on Long Island, its bold form, water-gilded surface and color cause it to dwarf the common Bellamy-style stern board and decorative forms, despite its small size. Made ca 1865-1880, it was most certainly carved by a Civil War veteran. Flanking each side, framed by carved streamers, are dates of both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, while above is the word "Liberty". Underneath are crossed flags, resting within a crown-shaped pediment, on which are three stars. The depth of the carving adds greatly to its appeal, as the eagle protrudes a full five inches from the wall.
