  CIGAR BAND PIECEWORK, CIRCA 1880-1920
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
CIGAR BAND PIECEWORK, CIRCA 1880-1920:

Silk bands like these were used to wrap bunches of cigars. Beginning in the Victorian period, women saved them to piece together into decorative pillow tops and quilts, usually in some variation of the log cabin quilt pattern, such as this pineapple log cabin design. This practice was pursued through the 1920's to create stunning examples of rural folk art.

Mounting: the textile is stitched to 100% natural fabric and mounting over an archival barrier on a wooden strainer frame. The acrylic box frame has a u.v. protective front.

Condition: The work was found unfinished without a back or binding. Silk was used to finish and bind it in the traditional manner.
