CHROME YELLOW COUNTRY TABLE WITH HIGHLY UNUSUAL FORM AND GREAT SURFACE, MAINE, CA 1890:
Found in Maine, this chrome yellow farm table is a striking example of late 19th century, rural American folk art with bright color and great surface. The elongated octagon top is a very uncommon form and retains most of its original paint with light, expected wear and especially attractive crazing. This is supported by an unusual configuration that combines tapered legs set at a 45-degree angle and joined by X-shaped stretchers, the lower of which has a small shelf on top. The framework is mortised into 2 narrow splines that serve as a skirt on the two long sides. These are the kinds of eccentricities I have encountered in other tables of Maine origin.
The table is sturdy and sit-able with generous height and plenty of leg room.
Condition: There is expected minor wear throughout. The only retouch is in the form of a light wash over two small areas with minor paint loss, located in one corner of the top. |
