CHICAGO RELATIONSHIP:
45 STARS, CIVIL WAR VETERAN'S REUNION, A RARE FORMAT WITH CORPS BADGES AROUND THE PERIMETER, CHICAGO, 1900, EX-RICHARD PIERCE COLLECTION:
45 star American national parade flag, printed on silk. Lining the perimeter are printed corps badges from Civil War units and representations of medals from the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) and the Women's Relief Corps. Below is advertising for a Civil War Veterans Reunion in Chicago in the year 1900. I am aware of fewer than ten known examples of this very graphic flag, all of which I have owned. The border makes the design highly unusual, and I have not seen other reunion flags that were done in this style.
The G.A.R. was the primary organization for Civil War Veterans. It was similar to today's American Legion or VFW, but more fraternal in nature.
Utah became the 45th state in 1896. It had been attempting to gain statehood for many years, but remained a territory, primarily due to the fact that the Mormon Church and Utah authorities continued to be openly tolerant of polygamy. In 1890, Mormon Church President Wilford Woodruff published a manifesto that denounced the contract of "any marriages forbidden by the law of the land". This gave way to Utah's 1896 acceptance. The 45 star flag was generally used from that year until 1907, when Oklahoma joined the Union. Due to the Spanish-American War (1898) and Teddy Roosevelt's famous world tour of the "White Fleet" (launched in 1907), this was an extremely patriotic period.
Provenance: Ex-Richard Pierce.
Mounting: The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in a sold walnut molding of the 1840-1860 period. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is U.V. protective. |
